The race was animated daily by attackers, opportunists, and riders chasing secondary classifications, including the now-defunct intermediate sprint competition.

Among those animators was John Talen, riding for the Panasonic–Isostar team. This squad, built around the powerful structure of the Panasonic sponsorship and guided by the influence of Peter Post, was one of the most respected outfits of the late 1980s. Known for its discipline and tactical strength, the team collected victories across Europe, particularly in stage races and sprints. Riders like Erik Breukink and Johan van der Velde contributed to its success, while Talen played his role as a fast and aggressive finisher.
