1980 / Boule d'Or - Studio Casa / Roger De Vlaeminck

Year: 1980

Team: Boule d’Or - Studio Casa

Rider: Roger de Vlaeminck

The 1980 season carried a distinct sense of transition. The dominance of Bernard Hinault in stage racing was unmistakable, as he claimed both the Tour de France 1980 and the Giro d’Italia 1980, asserting himself as the new force in the Grand Tours. Meanwhile, the Spring Classics remained a battleground for specialists, with hard men and tacticians still dictating the rhythm on cobbles and narrow Flemish roads. It was a year where experience could still match the rising tide of younger champions.

Within that landscape, the Belgian Boule d’Or–Casa Studio team embodied continuity. Deeply rooted in Flanders, and backed by a coffee brand alongside an interior design sponsor, the team reflected a very local identity in an increasingly international peloton. Their focus remained firmly on the classics and shorter stage races, where race intelligence and positioning mattered as much as raw strength. While 1980 did not bring them overwhelming headline victories, they remained competitive throughout the Belgian calendar, collecting wins in smaller races and animating the decisive moments of the Spring campaign.

Leading the team was Roger De Vlaeminck, one of the most formidable classics riders the sport has ever known. By 1980, his palmarès was already extraordinary, highlighted by four victories in Paris–Roubaix and a string of triumphs in monuments and major one-day races. Though he was no longer at the absolute peak that defined the mid-1970s, De Vlaeminck remained highly competitive. That season, he continued to place prominently in the classics, using his unmatched technical skills on cobbles and his fierce racing instinct to challenge younger rivals.

De Vlaeminck’s character was as legendary as his results. Outspoken and uncompromising, he often compared himself directly to Eddy Merckx, claiming superiority in the toughest races. Whether controversial or charismatic, it reflected the confidence that made him such a feared competitor.
