1964 / Televizier

Year: 1964

Team: Televizier

The 1964 cycling season reflected a sport where national pride still played a major role, yet commercial teams were becoming increasingly influential. It was a year marked by the dominance of Jacques Anquetil, who secured his fifth victory in the Tour de France 1964 after an intense duel with Raymond Poulidor—a rivalry that captivated fans and symbolized the contrast between calculated precision and heartfelt perseverance. Across Europe, cycling was growing rapidly in popularity, and media exposure began to shape the sport in new ways.

In the Netherlands, the Televizier team represented this shift perfectly. Sponsored by Televizier, a Dutch television magazine, the team was one of the early examples of media-backed sponsorship in cycling. Rather than a traditional industrial sponsor, this connection to publishing and broadcasting highlighted how cycling was becoming part of a broader entertainment landscape. Televizier functioned largely as a national selection, bringing together talented Dutch riders for major international races, including the Tour de France.

Among those riders was Cees Haast, a solid and dependable competitor who embodied the hardworking ethos of Dutch cycling in the 1960s. While not a prolific winner on the international stage, Haast had proven his class by winning the Dutch National Road Race Championship in 1964. His role within the team was often that of a loyal worker—riding in support, covering attacks, and representing his country with consistency and determination.

The Televizier team itself did not dominate the biggest races, but its importance lay elsewhere. It helped elevate Dutch cycling onto the international stage, offering riders the structure and visibility needed to compete with the established French, Italian, and Belgian squads. There was also a certain novelty to the team: a group tied not to factories or bicycles, but to the rapidly expanding world of media.
