1978 / Fiorella - Citroen

Year: 1978

Team: Fiorella - Citroën

The Fiorella–Citroën team operated as a spirited and opportunistic professional squad within the late 1970s peloton. Sponsored by Fiorella, an Italian textile and clothing company, and Citroën, the team reflected a cross-border identity that was becoming increasingly common in professional cycling. It combined Italian racing culture with French industrial backing, creating a squad built more on aggression and visibility than on controlling major stage races.

Rather than focusing on general classification ambitions, Fiorella–Citroën targeted breakaways, stage opportunities, and one-day races where race situations could be exploited. Their riders were frequently seen animating early moves, forcing stronger teams to organize the chase. While they did not dominate the biggest events, they regularly achieved solid results in smaller European races, earning respect for their willingness to race actively rather than defensively.

The team’s approach suited the era: a time when the peloton was less tightly controlled than in modern cycling, and when opportunistic squads could still influence the outcome of a race simply by committing early to the right break.
